Every adventure leaves a story. This is where we write them down.
Every adventure leaves two trails behind.
One is the trail beneath your boots.
The other is the one it leaves in your memory.
The first disappears with time. Rain washes away footprints. Grass grows back. Roads change. Campsites are packed away.
The second trail is different.
It grows every time you tell the story.
Some of my favorite memories aren't defined by reaching a destination.
They're the conversations with park rangers who shared stories you won't find on a trail sign.
They're the quiet mornings with a cup of coffee before the rest of camp wakes up.
They're the wrong turns that led to unexpected discoveries, the locals who pointed us toward places we'd never heard of, and the moments that reminded me the best adventures rarely go according to plan.
Those are the things worth remembering.
That's what these Field Notes are for.
Not just to document where we went.
But to capture what we learned, what surprised us, what made us laugh, and what made us stop long enough to appreciate the world around us.
Some entries will be reflections from the trail.
Others will dive into the history of a forgotten place.
Some will share practical lessons that make the next adventure a little easier.
Every one of them begins with the same thing:
Curiosity.
I've learned that the more questions you ask, the richer every journey becomes.
Why was this bridge built here?
Who lived in this abandoned farmhouse?
What makes this forest different from the one a hundred miles away?
Why does this old map show a town that no longer exists?
Sometimes those questions lead to incredible answers.
Sometimes they lead to even better questions.
If these pages inspire you to pull over at a historical marker, take the longer trail, strike up a conversation with a stranger, or simply look a little closer at the world around you...
Then they've done exactly what they were meant to do.
